General Information:

The Whiting Community Center is located at 1938 Clark Street. Entrances are on Clark Street and Community Court. Parking is available on the street and in the municipal lot directly north of the Center. The Center is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Center is open from Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Saturday hours are from 8:00 am to 3:00 PM, October through May. The Center is closed on holidays, and hours are subject to change. Call 219/659-0860 for any facilities or program questions.

Children must have a Community Center identification card to use the facilities. Parents/Guardians must personally sign up their child at the front desk and show proof of residency at that time. Photo ID's are given to any child that is a Whiting resident. Non-resident children, provided that they attend schools located in the Whiting/Robertsdale geographical area, may also obtain a Community Center ID. Teenagers possessing a Community Center ID must have it in their possession at all times while using the Center's facilities. The initial photo ID is provided free of charge. There is a $5.00 replacement fee.

Please note that proof of residency is required when purchasing a Center pass.
A valid pass is required to participate in the Center's activities.

The Whiting Parks are available free of charge to all residents from sunrise to sunset. Fees for non residents are posted as required. With the exception of guide dogs, no pets are permitted in any park facility. Top of Page

Aerobics

Various types (including Pilates) and levels of land and water aerobic instruction are available throughout the week. AM and PM classes are held in both the large and small gyms and the pool. Please check with Center staff for advice on the time and skill level that best fits your needs.

Basketball

Open basketball is available in the Center's two gyms. (Refer to gym schedule for available times for adult and/or child use.)

Gym Rentals are also available to adults at a cost of $35.00 per hour. Restrictions apply so inquire at the front desk for details. Top of Page

Big Gym

Small Gym

Bowling

A twelve lane bowling facility is located on the ground floor. Adult and youth leagues are available as well as open bowling. Prices are posted in the bowling alley. Private parties can also be reserved on Fridays nights. Top of Page

Exercise and weight lifting

Three exercise rooms contain tread mills, bikes, weight training machines, stair steppers, elliptical machine and free weights. Additional stationary bikes and exercise mats are available at the corners of the running track above the large gym. Top of Page

Toning Room

Handball and racquetball court

It is suggested one reserve this court in order to secure it for the time you wish to use it. Check with the desk concerning reservation details. Top of Page

Lakefront Park

Pavilion, tennis courts, sand volleyball,
Located at the lakefront park, the pavilion is available for rental from June 1st through the end of August. Inquire at the Center for details. Due to the popularity of this rental, it is suggested one call as early as possible after January 1st of each year to reserve their date.

Lakefront parking fees (Memorial Day through Labor Day) are determined by residency. Whiting residents may pick up their free parking sticker at the Community Center once the park has opened.

Besides play areas for children, the Lakefront Park also includes tennis courts and a sand volleyball area. In winter, the snow covered hills provide hours of sledding enjoyment for children of all ages.

Preschool

A half-day preschool is available for children aged three to five years old. Morning or afternoon classes run from September through May. Five year olds attend Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Three and four year olds attend Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is a monthly fee of $85.00 for the five year olds and $65.00 for the three and four year olds. Top of Page

Running and jogging

An eighth-mile running track circles the upper portion of the large gym. Its banked turns and carpeted track make it an ideal place for running as well as jogging and power walking. Top of Page

Swimming

The 5 lane, 20 yard pool is available for adult only and open swim throughout the week. Water aerobics, water yoga, and swimming lessons for adults and children are offered on a scheduled basis. From October through May, Saturday pool party packages are available. Top of Page

Yoga

Beginning and intermediate Hatha yoga classes are offered throughout the week and on Saturdays. Sessions are held in the elegant Memorial room on the second floor or in the pool. Please check with Center staff for advice on the time and skill level that best fits your needs. Top of Page

Youth-oriented activities vary throughout the year. See "fliers" displayed in the lobby for youth programs that are being presented now.
